I was born in a tiny town in northern Minnesota and moved around a lot as a child and teenager. I went to St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where I studied English, with strong doses of Western civilization and creative writing. I’ve lived in Chicago, Illinois, since 2004.
When I’m not writing, I spend my time working for librarians, copy editing, volunteering at Tallgrass Sudbury School, cooking, and, of course, reading as much as I can. I read a lot of contemporary young adult fiction, but I also like to read sci fi, historical fiction, educational theory, and academic books about children’s and YA literature (more fun than it sounds–example: Reading the Adolescent Romance: Sweet Valley High and the Popular Young Adult Romance Novel).
